Get competitive
CyBowl & Billiards is the perfect place to kick off date night. With bowling lanes, pool tables, and an arcade, there’s plenty to keep the fun going. They also have Buck Bowling, which is available only during the semester, on Sundays & Mondays. If you work up an appetite, you don’t have to leave. The Underground Cafe serves food and drinks, making it easy to have a blast without breaking the bank.
Time Out brings back the nostalgic glory days of arcade gaming with classics such as Pac-Man and Galaga. They also host karaoke every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Whether you’re singing your favorite songs or trying to beat each other’s high score, it’s a fun and inexpensive night out.
For the sporty competitive couples, Harvest Pickleball & Tennis offers indoor pickleball and tennis courts that are open 24/7. It’s a great way for a little friendly competition, whether you’re playing pickleball or tennis.

Browse local museums
Take a step back in time at the Ames History Museum where you can explore exhibits highlighting the historic events that helped shape Ames in the community it is today. From local architecture to historical artifacts, there’s plenty to discover while wondering through the museum together. Tickets are $5-8, but for the month of July they are offering free admission.
Located on Iowa State University’s campus, the Brunnier Art Museum features a diverse collection of decorative arts from all over the world. Browse paintings, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics, each piece offering something new to interpret, this is free for all to visit.
Enjoy the outdoors
Ada Hayden Heritage Park is one of Ames’ most scenic spots. Pack a picnic, walk the trails around the lake, or take in the peaceful views together. It’s also one of Ames’ best spots to watch the sunset or capture scenic photos!
Another fun option is Brookside Park, which features walking trails, picnic shelters, open green spaces, and plenty of shaded areas. It’s an easy place to set up a relaxing and chill afternoon date.
Take a stroll through Reiman Gardens, this 17-acre award winning botanical garden features seasonal exhibits, collections of plants, and a beautiful butterfly garden. Keep an eye out for the brand-new baby gnome, right next to Elwood. Admission ranges between $6-12, and Iowa State students can get in free with their student IDs.
Spend your Saturday mornings browsing the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market together. Grab a coffee and check out local vendors with fresh produce or handmade goods together. The market is held every Saturday through October, it’s the best way to support local businesses in Ames!
Enjoy live music
Alluvial Brewing Company hosts live music throughout the week, featuring local and regional artists. Enjoy a brew on the patio and an evening full of music. It’s an easy way to plan a memorable date, tickets are available on Alluvial’s website, and the average ticket price is $15-20.
Did someone say free outdoor concerts? In Ames, there are several locations that offer free outdoor concerts that are perfect for an evening date. Bandshell Park hosts free community concerts and events throughout the year where you can bring lawn chairs or a blanket and experience the live performances.
Roosevelt Summer Sundays is an Ames summer stapple, every Sunday from 7:00 p.m. till 8:30 p.m. through August, located at Roosevelt Park. Set up your lawn chairs and spend the evening relaxing in the park together.

You won’t want to miss this customizable mac & cheese restaurant, which offers a yummy meal at an affordable price. Roni’s Mac Bar lets you build your own grilled cheese, mac & cheese, or baked potato. you can pick from toppings such as pulled pork, Doritos, and even pineapple, if you’re feeling adventurous.
Located in downtown Ames, Great Plains Pizza & Dough Co. has heart-shaped pizza available for any special occasion and there is no better way to say ‘I love you’ than with a heart-shaped pizza. Pair it with their famous honey drizzle for the crust, and you’ve got a date that is fun, affordable and delicious.
You can never say no to a sweet treat, The Outside Scoop, is a great place to satisfy that sweet tooth craving. This locally owned ice cream van is scooping up classic favorites or seasonal flavors with high-quality ingredients and original recipes.
