Ames comes alive in the summer and this year there’s more reason than ever to get outside and explore. From community events and live music to relaxing days at the pool, the season is packed with ways to make the most of every warm-weather moment.
Live Music
Kick off your summer evenings at the Goldfinch Room Songwriter Showcase at Reiman Gardens, where acoustic sets are performed surrounded by some of the most beautiful gardens in the area. It’s an experience as easy on the eyes as it is on the ears.
For a laid-back Sunday tradition, head to Roosevelt Summer Sundays, a free concert series held every year at Roosevelt Park. Pack your blanket, bring your people, and enjoy a relaxing evening without spending a dime.
Speaking of Sundays, Prairie Moon Winery‘s Sunday Music Series runs every single Sunday this summer. Pour a glass, order from their brick-oven pizza menu, and let the sounds of local musicians carry the evening.
June is also the month for Ames on the Half Shell, the iconic outdoor concert series that turns Friday evenings into a community celebration. Grab your chairs, bring your crew, and come thirsty. Beverages are available on site and the vibes are always good.
Once a month from June through September, the Iowa Arboretum & Gardens hosts Tunes in the Trees, a Tuesday evening concert series complete with food trucks and live music nestled among the trees. Consider it your midweek reset.
And if your calendar still has room, live music is happening regularly at Alluvial Brewing, Mary Jane’s, and London Underground to name a few.
Community Events
On Thursday, June 11 from 5 to 8 p.m., the annual Art Walk takes over downtown, showcasing local businesses and community artists alike. From painters and photographers to jewelers, woodworkers, potters, and sculptors, there is something to discover around every corner.
Mark your calendars for July 9 through 12 when the Summer Sidewalk Sales bring deals and promotions to participating downtown Ames’ businesses. You never know what you might find or how good of a deal you might score.
Every week, the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market brings together local makers, artists, and artisans for a stroll worth taking. Find fresh produce, food trucks, activities for the kids, and so much more.
Families, take note. Summer Daze at the Parc is your go-to for a fun, low-key summer evening with the kids. Food trucks, activities, and good vibes all summer long.
And on August 27, make your way to Campustown for Taste of Campustown. Purchase tickets at one of the ticket booths in the district and redeem them at participating bars and restaurants for sample-size bites of their most popular offerings. Grab your friends and make a night of it.
Summer Activities
Cool down at Furman Aquatic Center, where summer is in full swing from the shallow end to the high dive. Whether you are working on your tan or just beating the heat, this is the place to be this summer.
For a slower pace, Ada Hayden Heritage Park is always a great call. Pack a picnic, bring a fishing pole, or take a bike ride around the paths and soak in some fresh air.
Need a break from the heat? The Ames Public Library has you covered all summer long with reading challenges, crafting events, family story time, and book clubs for all ages.
Thrill seekers, Rail Explorers is a must. Pedal a railbike 156 feet over the Des Moines River Valley for a one-of-a-kind summer adventure.
And if you are feeling competitive, Ames has three beautiful courses to choose from. Tee off at Homewood Golf Course, Veenker Memorial Golf Course, or Coldwater Golf Links for a round with friends this summer.
