Make the most of an extra day in Ames

This year, we’re lucky enough to get an extra day of the month, and we know just how to spend it. Leap Day doesn’t happen very often (every four years, to be exact!) So, it’s important to celebrate this unique holiday in the best way possible. Here’s our recommendations to enjoy this extra special day in Ames.

Leap into new adventures

Having an extra day in Ames is the perfect opportunity to broaden your horizons and try something new. If you’re seeking thrills, look no further than the Iowa State Skydiving Club. With regularly scheduled jumps, the club’s goal is to educate and encourage others to get involved with this dare-devil activity. But, if you’re looking for a fun venture that’s a little closer to the ground, head over to the Ames/ISU Ice Arena. Enjoy a game of pick-up hockey, power skating, figure freestyle, or just skate on your own.

Think outside the box

Use this Leap Day to push the boundaries of logical thinking and have fun while doing it! No Escape Iowa in downtown Ames is sure to provoke some creative problem-solving. Their technology-based escape rooms are fun for all ages. After solving puzzles and escaping, head over to The Mucky Duck Pub with your group for a free appetizer! For a more relaxed atmosphere of game play, check out Time Out, Ames’ very own arcade bar.

Dive into new dining

New year, new food! Take this day to let your tastebuds explore new dining experiences around Ames. Cornbred, a locally loved barbecue joint, has recently launched new sticky ribs. Trust us on this, these ribs are out of this world. Since Leap Day falls on a Thursday, it’s the perfect day to take advantage of BOGO margaritas at Celaya Tex-Mex! Sip on a house-made marg and enjoy their delicious chips and queso.

Create something new

After another (full) trip around the sun, it’s time to get crafty. Octagon Center for the Arts is full of fun and festive holiday workshops all year long. Sign up for a class, pick up supplies for your next craft, or purchase locally made art! Reiman Gardens is another unique place full of nature-themed activities and crafts. While you’re there, don’t forget to stop by the butterfly wing!

Dress for the occasion

It’s not very often that you can plan an outfit for February 29, that’s why it’s important to treat yourself. Located in NorthGrand Mall, Ragstock is the perfect vintage store to shop for an updated wardrobe. They’re always having sales, so keep an eye out for a good deal! To bring the outfit together, stop by Ames Silversmithing for some new bling. The jewelry at this downtown shop is created by professionals for a one-of-a-kind look.
