Pop-up: Handmade baskets from Uganda

The Workspace is hosting a Pop-Up Basket Sale with the Uganda Alliance Club April 14-25. By purchasing a handmade basket created by members of the Tusubila Crafts Group, you support women in Kamuli, Uganda. Baskets are made with dried raffia and banana leaves, and the money from sales goes directly toward supporting the artist’s family with food, school fees, and other needs. Hours are Monday-Friday from 2-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and baskets sell for $10-$25.

This initiative began through the Iowa State University Uganda Program. Students studying abroad were purchasing baskets and saw that market access was often limited for the artists. Thus, the Uganda Alliance Club was formed, and now students work with the Tusubila group to bring baskets over, sell them in the United States, and then send the money back to the artists.

The Uganda Alliance is making a difference and bringing tusubila (hope) to women in Uganda. The Workspace is honored to support this effort by hosting this pop-up sale.

The Workspace is located in the Memorial Union at 2229 Lincoln Way on the ISU campus in Ames.
