New Century Saxophone Quartet

Ames Town & Gown presents a different kind of quartet

Something a little different is in store for the Ames Town & Gown concert audience on Saturday evening, March 23, as we continue our 74th chamber music season. The internationally renowned NEW CENTURY SAXOPHONE QUARTET will bring us a program that ranges from portions of J.S. Bach’s Art of the Fugue, Shostakovich’s rousing Folk Dances, and Dvorák’s “American” String Quartet (composed in Spillville, Iowa), to newer works written specifically for saxophone ensembles by Jun Nagao, John Mackey, Paul Harvey, Marcelo Zarvos, and Barbara Kolb.

Though not as commonly heard as string quartets, saxophone quartets– soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone instruments –  have actually existed since the 19th century. The New Century Saxophone Quartet won first prize in the Concert Artists Guild Competition in 1993 and has performed twice at the White House, in Carnegie Hall and in other important concert venues throughout the U.S, Europe, and Asia.

In addition to their Saturday evening concert, the musicians of the New Century Saxophone Quartet will present a program entitled “Entrepreneurship for Musicians” on Friday, March 22, 2:10-3:30 in Iowa State University’s Estes Music Hall, Room 102.

Ames Town & Gown’s 74th concert season is presented in cooperation with the Department of Music and Theatre at Iowa State University and is made possible in part with support from the Ames Commission on the Arts (COTA).
