Lecture: Socially Responsible Innovation by John Kasich

2023-2024 Manatt-Phelps Lecture in Political ScienceĀ

Two-term former Ohio Governor John Kasich is a politician, a New YorkĀ Times best-selling author, and a contributor for MSNBC and NBC NewsĀ who believes that unity is the answer to ourĀ most common problems. He is known asĀ a leading voice in promoting bipartisan solutions toĀ health care reform, immigration and international trade, and hasĀ been one ofĀ the few Republicans to advocate for Medicaidā€™s expansion.

Kasich served as a member of Congress from central Ohio for 18 years. He wasĀ elected to the U.S. House at just 30 years old, after having become theĀ youngest state senator in Ohio history. He went on to become the chairmanĀ of the House Budget Committee and balanced the Federal Budget fourĀ times ā€” a feat not accomplished since. After leaving Congress in 2000,Ā Kasich worked as a managing director in the Investment Banking Division ofĀ Lehman Brothers, where he helped companies secure the resources theyĀ needed to succeed and create jobs. He undertook a high-profile run forĀ President in 2016, ultimately earning 154 delegates and shifting the tenor ofĀ debate from negative personal attacks to one of “light and hope.” He was theĀ final major challenger to Donald Trump for the Republican nomination.

Drawing on his decades of experience in the Statehouse and the halls ofĀ Congress, Governor Kasich examines the key issues that will define the nextĀ decade of American public policy.Ā From fiscal policy and healthcare toĀ foreign affairs, Gov. Kasich explains how the inability of Americaā€™s leaders toĀ confront these mounting problems with legitimate solutions hasĀ disillusioned voters who see no progress from either party. Through it all,Ā Governor Kasich remindsĀ  audiences that, at the end of the day, changeĀ comes from the bottom up.

This lecture will be delivered as a fireside chat format with Karen Kedrowski, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and professor of political science at Iowa State University.
