Iowa’s Black Pioneers

Join us at the Ames Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 3 in the auditorium to learn about Iowa’s Black pioneers. Participate in-person or online via Zoom at www.AmesPL.org/events.

These pioneers, who arrived in the state from 1830-1900, included enslaved and free people—farmers, miners, and many others. This presentation will be led by Ricki King, a certified genealogist and founder of Roots to Branches Genealogy, which specializes in forensic genealogy (identifying unknown heirs, etc.). Ricki is also the vice president of the Iowa Historical Foundation and was instrumental in changing state law to allow death records to be opened after 50 years.

Sponsored by the Ames Public Library Friends Foundation.
