A Gathering of Artists

Artist Kristin M. Roach will host the Ames Community Arts Council’s Gathering of Artists in downtown Ames at her studio, 138 Main St., Ames, on Tues., May 21 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Existing at the intersection of nature and science, Kristin’s art is a visual meditation exploring the intricate tapestry of our backyard ecology. Her work includes paintings, weavings, and immersive installations. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy the Junk Mail Migration series, while plant friends will find the Backyard Botanical series to be a great starting point for exploration of the struggle between weeds and wildflowers.

One of Kristin’s latest works is her Bird Descrying Tapestry. Using the combined data from the Cornell Ornithology Lab’s eBird project and Iowa’s historic bird sighting data, this project shows the evolution of bird sightings in Iowa over decades. When seen in person, it is possible to interact with the piece and its selection of 10 different migrant visitors that are being deeply impacted by deforestation of the northern forests. Visit Kristin’s website,, to learn more about her and her work.

The gatherings, typically held on the third Tuesday of each month at various locations, highlight local artists from around the Ames area. Artists and art enthusiasts of all types meet other artists, get feedback, get inspired and overall have fun at the gatherings. The meetings are free and open to all. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Gathering of Artists is hosted by the Ames Community Arts Council and made possible through local option tax funds provided by the City of Ames through the Commission on the Arts. If you would like more information about participating in or hosting a gathering, contact the Ames Community Arts Council by calling (515) 259-0494, emailing, or by visiting the website,
