As the summer weather heats up, the adventures in Ames do too! We’ve put together a guide to help you make the most of your summer. Grab your sunscreen, invite friends or family, and get ready to explore some of the best outdoor activities Ames has to offer.
Mornings at the Market
The perfect way to start your Saturday is exploring the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market. Held every Saturday from May through October, the market features fresh produce, local art, baked treats, and live music. The market also has special events during each market, including face painting, the bookmobile, pony rides, and more! It’s a great place to support local businesses while exploring downtown Ames.
Hit the Railroad
Looking for a unique outdoor adventure? Then Rail Explorers is a must-visit place for you. They offer an unforgettable experience as you pedal 156 feet above the Des Moines River Valley on a rail bike. Take in the incredible views on one of their three scenic valley trails. Gather some friends together and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Cool Off at the Pool
Furman Aquatic Center is the place to be to cool off this summer. With a splash pool, lazy river, and water slides, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Spend the day racing down the water slides or relax by floating down the lazy river. The aquatic center is a great way to beat the Iowa heat!
Explore the Gardens
You won’t want to miss the Big & Small Exhibit at Reiman Gardens this summer, open until September 30. This colorful display features larger than life flower sculptures that add imagination and creativity throughout the gardens. While you’re there, you can’t forget to check out the brand-new baby gnome, which was unveiled on July 9. This makes for a picture-perfect day at the gardens for people of all ages.
Adventure at the Park
McFarland Park and Ada Hayden Heritage Park are the best places for kayaking, fishing, biking, walking, or simply enjoying nature. Ada Hayden offers more than three miles of scenic trails, with beautiful lake views, and kayak rentals on Saturdays and Sundays with CrawDaddy Outdoors from 11:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. McFarland Park features off-road bicycle trails, a hammock hangout area, and peaceful nature scenery. There’s nothing quite like adding a little outdoor adventure to your day.
Tee Off the Day
Get your day started by teeing off at one of the many golf courses in Ames, including Veenker Memorial Golf Course, Coldwater Golf Links, or Homewood Golf Course. These courses offer a set of challenges that make them enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. Whether you’re looking to hit the driving range or play 18 holes with a group of friends, it’s a great way to start the day and to spend time outdoors this summer.
