Summer sounds

June 15, 2022

Music lovers have a reason to celebrate this summer in Ames. No fewer than eight outdoor venues will be rockin’ the area starting in June – and they won’t break the bank. Most are free or require a minimal entrance fee.

Let’s start with the offerings at Bandshell Park: On Thursday nights, Ames Municipal Band will perform patriotic tunes, marches, selections from popular movies and Broadway, and more. Then, through June, Ames Jaycees present Ames on the Half Shell each Friday night, with a different style of music each week.

Summer concerts at area wineries are a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the Iowa countryside…and sample the local wine! This summer, Snus Hill Winery in Madrid will present concerts both on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. Prairie Moon Winery in north Ames offers music, wood-fired pizza, sangria, and more each Sunday afternoon. Another Sunday option is The Cellar at White Oak, a winery in Cambridge (just south of Ames).

If that’s not enough music for you, consider Roosevelt Summer Sundays in Roosevelt Park, each Sunday evening. Or enjoy Tunes in the Trees at Iowa Arboretum in Madrid on Tuesday nights. Finally, the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market always features musical entertainment each Saturday morning. Shop for produce, then stop and listen!

Pro tip: Bring your own lawn chair or blanket to these events. Also, many venues will allow you to bring in your own food and non-alcoholic beverages; others have food trucks and wine/beer for sale. Check details before you go.
