Spend National BBQ Month at these go-to joints

April 20, 2023

Barbecue: where savory meats meet sweet sauces. May is National Barbecue Month, and what better way to celebrate than by checking out Ames’ local BBQ spots? Whether you smother it all over your face or tuck it into a bun, Ames has the best spots to get your BBQ on.

Hickory Park’s popular collection of smoked sandwiches and platters makes for a mouth-watering lineup and an easy choice for dinner.  The Saucy Southerner plus a side of green beans with bacon bits equals the perfect spread.

Cornbred’s rustic vibes and handcrafted sauces put a new spin on the classics. This barbecue joint in the old train depot pairs craft meats with honey potato bread. Their house-ground brisket burger takes comfort food to a whole new level.

A long-standing Iowa favorite, Jethro’s BBQ serves up hearty plates of smoked meat and other provisions. Try their “Pit-Master Platters” alongside a warm cornbread muffin, or the infamous Emmenecker challenge paired with a pound of waffle fries.

Go off the beaten path at B-Fabulous-BBQ in Slater. Just south of Ames you’ll find some genius pairings like BBQ nachos or brisket mac n cheese. Take the reins and concoct your own sauce… who says spicy can’t be sweet?
