A morning at Reiman Gardens
With 17 acres of stunning landscapes, vibrant flowers, and diverse plant collections, Reiman Gardens is an oasis in the heart of Ames. Families can stroll through the butterfly wing, engage with hands-on activities in the Children’s Garden, or discover the new Garden Playhouse exhibit, open through September 30!

An afternoon outside
Ames and surrounding areas are full of activities for the family that get you outside, making memories to last a lifetime. Fill the rest of your afternoon with any of these family-fun activities:
- Cool off from the heat and take a swim at Furman Aquatic Center! Take a lap in the lazy river to relax or race down the waterslides. Splash with the little ones in the kids’ area featuring a large play structure and multiple slides. There is something for everyone in the family.
- Take a ride on the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. Have a relaxing family adventure through the picturesque landscapes of Iowa. Visitors can learn about the rich history of the railroad in the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum located onsite.
- From Brookside Park’s scenic trails to Bandshell Park’s lively events, there’s a park for every occasion. The city of Ames has 38 parks for everyone to enjoy! You won’t want to miss Miracle Park at Inis Grove. This park features a 100% accessible playground and ball field.
Dinner at Hickory Park
Hickory Park’s popular collection of smoked sandwiches and platters makes for a mouth-watering lineup and an easy choice for dinner. Not only does Hickory Park rock barbecue, but desserts as well. Ice cream has a separate menu at Hickory Park, ranging from banana splits and shakes, to malts, and floats!
