Town & Gown: Pianist Zhenni Li-Cohen
Described as “an artist . . . who fascinates even as she provokes” (Gramophone), and “a thrillingly good pianist” (The New Yorker), Zhenni Li-Cohen was introduced to our audience when she appeared here with the Merz Trio. Her solo recital will include tours-de-force from several different cultures, reflecting her own remarkable life story and broad interests.
The program features “Bach to Rach”: J.S. Bach’s extraordinary Chaconne, as arranged for solo piano by Busoni; Scriabin’s Prelude and Nocturne for the Left Hand; Hundred Birds Honoring the Phoenix Queen (traditional Chinese, arranged by Jianzhong Wang); Preludes from Album “A Letter” by Ukrainian composer Sergei Bortkiewicz; and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 2.
TICKETS: $35, available online at www.amestownandgown.org; at Rieman Music, Chocolaterie Stam, and at the door. FREE to K-12 and college/university with student ID. All seating is general admission.
EXTRA EVENT: In addition to her Friday evening concert, Ms. Li-Cohen will present a master class on Thursday, April 10 from 10:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, Iowa State University. This event is free and open to the public.
The concert is dedicated to the memory of Art Staniforth, for years a devoted friend and supporter of Ames Town & Gown, and president of the Board of Directors.
