Take a timeless ride back to the golden age of fun at the Story City Antique Carousel, tucked into the charming green of North Park.
This beautifully restored 1913 carousel, built by the Herschell Spillman Company of New York, delights riders with hand carved poplar animals including 20 horses, plus pigs, dogs, chickens, and two chariots. Everything circles to the cheerful calliope tunes of a 1936 Wurlitzer Military Band organ.
Originally owned by P. T. Gifford and taken to county fairs across Iowa, the carousel found its home in Story City in 1938. After a loving restoration in the early 1980s, it now shines with original colors and intricate stencil work.
Whether you are young or simply feel that way, climb aboard, listen to the lively music, and enjoy a ride that blends history and pure joy. Make your next outing memorable by spinning into the past. It is small town Americana at its most magical.
Typically the carousel opens in Late May and closes for the season at the end of September. Keep an eye on our Facebook for the current Hours of Operations!
For the safety of the carousel, staff, and riders, the Story City Antique Carousel will close if the heat index reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit or if lightning is present in the area.
High heat and storms can place stress on both people and machinery. These temporary closures help protect this historic treasure and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone on future visits.
