A town built on tracks

Did you know Ames, Iowa was named after a man who never lived here? The city owes its name to Oakes Ames, a congressman from Massachusetts with deep ties to the railroad industry. The city’s first building, the Ames Depot, was built in 1865 as the railroad came through, the same year the first home was constructed.

Today, you can dine where the tracks once bustled at Cornbred, a barbecue spot inside the historic train station, serves bold, tasty flavors in a unique setting.

Birthplace of the computer

Ames is home to a groundbreaking innovation that changed the world, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC), the first electronic digital computer. Developed in the late 1930s by Iowa State University physics professor John Atanasoff and his graduate student Clifford Berry, the ABC laid the foundation for modern computing as we know it.

While the original machine no longer exists, a full-scale working replica can be seen today at the Durham Center on the Iowa State University campus, a must-visit for tech lovers and history buffs alike!

Today, the library offers a wide range of programs and resources for all ages, including book clubs, writing workshops, educational events, and access to online databases and digital tools.

Jack Trice Stadium

Jack Trice Stadium honors Iowa State’s first Black athlete, Jack Trice, who died in 1923 from football injuries. It’s the only Division I stadium named after an African American, symbolizing his legacy of strength and integrity.

Opened in 1915, the 61,500-seat stadium is the second largest in the Big 12 and a powerful tribute to Trice’s enduring impact. The best atmosphere in Ames lies in Jack Trice Stadium on game day!
